How do we predict a child’s future height?
A child’s adult height is heavily influenced by genetics. Pediatricians commonly use the Mid-Parental Height Formula to estimate the genetic target height of a child.
For boys, we add 13 centimeters (or 5 inches) to the mother’s height, add it to the father’s height, and divide by 2. For girls, we subtract 13 centimeters from the father’s height, add it to the mother’s height, and divide by two. The result gives a highly probable target range.
