What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple, widely accepted screening tool used to measure the relationship between your weight and height. It provides a generalized indicator to help determine if a person has a healthy body weight for their specific height.
Maintaining a healthy BMI is crucial because being significantly overweight or underweight is associated with an increased risk of various health conditions, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.
How is BMI Calculated?
The standard metric formula for calculating BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in meters. Our calculator uses this exact WHO-approved formula:
BMI = Weight (kg) / Height² (m²)
WHO Standard BMI Categories
| BMI Range | Health Category | Health Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight | Increased Risk (Deficiencies) |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Normal Weight | Low Risk (Healthy) |
| 25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight | Increased Risk |
| 30.0 and Above | Obese | High Risk |
Limitations of BMI
While BMI is a useful general guideline, it has some limitations. It does not directly measure body fat percentage and does not account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution. Therefore:
- For Athletes: Muscular individuals may have a high BMI because muscle is denser than fat, falsely categorizing them as overweight.
- For the Elderly: It may underestimate body fat in older adults who have naturally lost muscle mass over time.
