What is a Leap Year?
A normal calendar year has 365 days. However, it actually takes Earth about 365.2422 days to orbit the sun. To keep our calendar in alignment with the Earth’s revolutions around the sun, we add an extra day (February 29) to the calendar almost every four years. A year with this extra day is called a Leap Year.

What is the mathematical rule for Leap Years?
A year is a leap year if it is perfectly divisible by 4. However, if the year is a century year (like 1900 or 2100), it must ALSO be perfectly divisible by 400 to be a leap year. This calculator handles that complex logic automatically.
