What is GST?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a comprehensive, multi-stage, destination-based indirect tax implemented in India. It is levied on every value addition across the supply chain, successfully replacing a myriad of indirect taxes (like VAT, excise duty, and service tax) to create a unified national market.

How to use this GST Calculator?

This simple yet powerful tool serves two primary calculation needs for businesses, accountants, and consumers:

  • Add GST (Exclusive): Use this when the price of the product does not currently include GST. The calculator will calculate the tax based on the slab and add it to the base amount to give you the final billing price.
  • Remove GST (Inclusive): Use this when the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) already includes GST. It performs reverse calculation to help you extract the actual base value of the product and find out the exact tax amount paid to the government.

Current GST Slabs in India

The GST Council of India has categorized goods and services into four primary tax slabs to ensure fair taxation:

GST Rate Commonly Applicable Items
5%Essential items like sugar, edible oil, spices, tea, coffee, and life-saving drugs.
12%Computers, processed food, cell phones, and umbrellas.
18%Hair oil, toothpaste, capital goods, industrial intermediaries, and most services (like IT & banking).
28%Luxury items, automobiles, aerated drinks, and tobacco products.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula to calculate GST?
To Add GST: GST Amount = (Original Cost x GST%) / 100.

To Remove GST: GST Amount = Original Cost – [Original Cost x {100 / (100 + GST%)}].
What is CGST, SGST, and IGST?
When a sale happens within the same state (Intra-state), the GST is divided equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). For example, an 18% tax becomes 9% CGST and 9% SGST. However, when a sale happens between two different states (Inter-state), the entire 18% is collected as IGST (Integrated GST) by the Central Government.
