What is Torque?
In physics and mechanics, Torque is a measure of the force that can cause an object to rotate about an axis. Just as force is what causes an object to accelerate in linear kinematics, torque is what causes an object to acquire angular acceleration. It is essentially a twisting force.
Common Units of Torque
- Newton-meter (N·m): The standard SI unit for torque. It represents a force of one Newton applied perpendicularly to the end of a moment arm that is one meter long.
- Pound-foot (lb-ft): The standard Imperial/US unit, frequently used in the automotive industry to describe engine performance.
- Kilogram-meter (kg-m): A metric unit of torque, based on the gravitational force exerted by one kilogram of mass acting at a one-meter distance.
