What are Roman Numerals?

Roman numerals are a numeral system that originated in ancient Rome and remained the usual way of writing numbers throughout Europe well into the Late Middle Ages. Numbers in this system are represented by combinations of letters from the Latin alphabet.

The standard symbols are: I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500), and M (1000). Today, they are still used in clock faces, movie sequels (like Star Wars: Episode IV), and Super Bowl events.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the maximum limit set to 3999?
In standard Roman numeral format, you cannot have four identical letters in a row (e.g., MMMM for 4000 is invalid). For numbers 4000 and above, the Romans used a line (vinculum) over a letter to indicate multiplication by 1000, which cannot be typed on standard keyboards.
